Lakeport

The county seat, with a walkable lakefront downtown.

Lakeport is the county seat of Lake County and one of its two incorporated cities. County government offices and many professional services are here, which gives the town a steady, year-round character that sets it apart from the resort-style shoreline communities.

The downtown is built around the lake, with Victorian-era architecture, a Saturday morning farmers' market and, in summer, a free concert series in Library Park. For dates and venues, use the Discover Lakeport events calendar rather than a list copied here, because lineups change every year.

Library Park, a few acres of lawn on the water at the edge of downtown, has free public boat ramps, docks, a small swimming beach and a gazebo used for summer music. The 1918 Carnegie library building that gives the park its name now holds city offices, and the town's original courthouse has been turned into a county history museum.

Lakeport puts on Fourth of July fireworks over the lake, and the Lake County Fair is held at the fairgrounds here over Labor Day weekend. From the Bay Area, the quickest way in is usually US-101 to Hopland, then Highway 175 over the hills for about 19 miles.

Buyers tend to look at Lakeport for in-town living near services, lakeside parks and the north-west shore of Clear Lake.
