Middletown

The southern gateway toward Napa and Santa Rosa.

Middletown is the southern gateway to Lake County, on the route toward the Napa Valley and Santa Rosa. That access makes it a practical choice for people who split time between the county and the Bay Area wine country.

It blends rural character with quicker highway access than the lakeside towns, and it is a common base for people who work outside the county.

The town got its name from its spot halfway between Calistoga and Lower Lake on the old stagecoach road over Mount St. Helena. Today Highway 29 follows much the same route, and the drive to the Napa area usually takes an hour to an hour and a half. Highway 175 also starts here and climbs north over Cobb Mountain toward Kelseyville and Lakeport.

Middletown has a small art gallery and community center at the junction of Highways 29 and 175, a local history museum, and vineyards and ranch land in the valley around town.

Allow for the drive when you test a commute; mountain roads take longer than the mileage suggests.
