Upper Lake

Upper Lake is a small, carefully restored town at the north end of the lake, known for its historic main street. An arch over Main Street marks the turn off Highway 20, and the restored Tallman Hotel and its neighbor, the Blue Wing, anchor the old-town block.

It is also a gateway to the Mendocino National Forest, roughly 900,000 acres of public land that starts a few minutes north of town. The forest includes the Snow Mountain Wilderness, where Snow Mountain, at 7,056 feet, is the highest point in Lake County.

Every year in late summer or early fall, the Blue Wing Blues Festival brings several nights of live blues to the garden between the Tallman Hotel and the Blue Wing, with two bands a night under the sycamores and a barbecue dinner. Check the current year's dates before you plan around it.

It suits buyers who want a quiet small-town setting with outdoor recreation close by and a short drive to the lake.
