Lake County Living

Clear Lake. Clean air. Room to breathe.

Why people are moving here

While much of California feels the squeeze of density and rising costs, Lake County offers space, water and a slower pace at prices that are generally lower than in the Bay Area. For many people that is the difference between getting by and building something lasting.

Fiber and 5G coverage have grown in parts of the county, which has made it realistic for remote professionals to trade a long commute for a view of Mount Konocti. Coverage varies by address, so check before you buy.

Lakes

Lake County has several lakes, including Clear Lake, Blue Lakes and Hidden Valley Lake. Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake wholly within California, covering about 68 square miles with roughly 100 miles of shoreline.

The lay of the land

The county covers about 1,327 square miles and borders Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Glenn, Colusa and Yolo counties. The terrain runs from the lake basin, about 1,300 feet above sea level, up to Snow Mountain at 7,056 feet in the Mendocino National Forest. Lakeport and Clearlake are the only incorporated cities; everything else, from Upper Lake to Hidden Valley Lake, is a small unincorporated community.

Local pulse

Saturday mornings at the Lakeport farmers' market, still water on Clear Lake before the bass boats go out, and sunsets that catch Mount Konocti just right: these are the rhythms that people describe when they talk about living here.

Planning your move

Moving to a rural area involves more than finding a house. Ask about water source and rights, septic or sewer, internet service, insurance and wildfire preparedness for any property. Questions about specific neighborhoods are welcome on our contact page.
